(WB) YAXCHILAN FALLS TO MAYAN FORCES, AS TATTERED ARMY FLEES SOUTH

TIKAL, 05 September 927 CE -- With the capture of the Otomi-Tiaxcalon's shattered capital of Yaxchilan, the Mayans can claim a symbolic victory but for its conscript army, the fall of Yaxchilan marks the start of a guerrilla war that could last for months, if not years. As many as 3,000 well-armed, well-trained Otomi-Tlaxcalon fighters have retreated to the highlands in the southern Bonampak region of the Yucatan, where they will be able to regroup in the coming weeks, hide, and begin launching surprise assaults against the Mayan forces.

The brutal war, dominated so far by relentless Mayan attacks, will change in character as immobile garrisons and their supply convoys become a ready target for the hardened Otomi-Tiaxcalon army.

"It is possible to predict already the guerrilla warfare will go on in the Bonampak region for a long period of time," said Mayan General Red Heron. "The final resolution of the conflict there still remains very remote."

Mayan generals are reportedly planning to base an occupational force in the Bohampak region, create a "sanitary cordon" along the perimeter of the southern highlands and try to contain the Otomi-Tiaxcalon troops. Officials insist that they will pursue the enemy and destroy them in the mountains-although history suggests that a Mayan victory in the hilly terrain is highly unlikely.

Nonetheless, Tikal has proclaimed a great victory over the enemy forces and plans are apparently already underway to sacrifice the captured leader, Lord Shield Jaguar, along with his 300 soldiers to the Goddess Tlazolteoil. The captives are presently held incommunicado in the royal dungeons where they are said to be undergoing interrogation.

The sacrificial ceremony of the "Flowery Death," in which the living hearts are ripped out with obsidian knives, will commence next Friday at the rising of the Sun God. The captives will be "on public display, bleeding in wretched humiliation before our ruler Chaan Muan and his assembled court," said a Tikal official. Huge crowds are expected to celebrate victory and witness the ceremony in the Great Plaza of Tikal.

A great work by Cavelo…as all are! This one rings true to me as someone extremely interested in all things Maya. Have spent many a trip trekking through jungles to see their “lost” cities. An amazing culture although yes sometimes brutal…but non-the-less an amazing people.

Cavelo’s art is never less than astonishing to me. The simplicity of his figures and of his line can be overwhelming – totally sexy, totally evocative. The finest of lines can conjure up a man’s body as true as the real thing. The powerful story in which that body is participating is never lost. Nothing is extraneous. The smallest detail plays a role. Here is true mastery of drawing as a craft. Even in plates like this Mayan one where simplicity seems to give way to complexity, there is much beauty and soul. The simplicity is still there but it is now wrapped in gorgeous, intimate detail. Cavelo’s approach to light and dark is startlingly effective. No matter how many times I look at one of his creations, I never lose my sense of wonder. Thank you for publishing so many examples of his genius.
