The Romans had come nearly a century before; dotting the rolling green land with squat fortresses, sucking the living wealth of the ancient Celtic homeland with rapacious greed...
Until the insurgency sprang to life under the leadership of a young warrior named Owein- the name meant 'Noble born' in the Old Tongue, and so he seemed to be; fair of face, tall and sheathed in smooth muscle, with eyes as blue as the summer sky and a voice both deep and melodious as Taliesan's in the days of mist. Owein led a battered people to the first victories tasted in a generation as the stout Roman fortresses burned brightly on moon-lit horizons and the pride of Latin manhood fell under the thirsty swords of Celtic vengeance.
The night's work had been fruitful- as the winking glames in the burning fortress attested. The raiders herded the captive Romans away from the conflagration to a safe clearing where they were stripped to loinclothes and evaluated. Owein nodded at the first- tall and sweat-slick, glistening in near nudity in the pale light. 'This one will do for some sport (his companions laughed with appreciation). Later we'll see what he fetches at market. Glancing at the second, dejected, captive he shook his head, 'This one we give to the gods.'
