Ed Ramsey w was an independent reporter whose articles appeared regularly in several papers. He liked looking around for off ball stories and had heard about a town with a weird reputation although no one seemed to know why – or if they did, they weren’t talking. So full of curiosity, Ed managed to ferret out the name of the town and some stories about disappearances.

A couple of weeks later, bags packed and car fully gassed up. Ed took off for the town to see what gave there. After a number of hours driving, he reached the town. It was a rather nondescript town that probably had a history dating back to the old west. It sure looked like an “old west” town.

Ed pulled his car up to a building where there was a middle-aged guy sitting with his feet up on a barrel.

“Hey there, old timer! Do you know where there is a library or town or a government office around here. I am a reporter looking for a story and heard stories about this town that sound interesting but I need to check them and make sure if they are true or rooted in some event or what.”

“What kinds of things you been hearin’ about our town?”

“Well some odd disappearances of people. People who just vanish into thin air – things like that.”

The man tilted back in his chair and a grin spread across his face. “You think we have an alien invasion going on here and the aliens are abducting folks hereabouts?”

“Well, no” said Ed laughing a bit. “I doubt that but it would be an interesting story if true.”

“I suppose,” said the man perking up a bit. “What kind of stories have you heard?”

“Well, there is one I heard from a couple of people about a sheriff, Clint Cody I think his name was. He and his three deputies who walked out of the town, vanished, and were never heard of again. You know anything about that?’

“Can’t say I do” replied the man. “Can you tell me more about it?”

“Sure” said Ed, “The story basically goes something like this:….

“A few years back there was an outlaw named Bart, who head up a gang of outlaws who were causing all kinds of trouble, robbing people on the streets, holding up banks and doing all kinds of nasty things.

“At the same time there was a sheriff named Cody who considered it his sacred duty to lock up this bad guy and his gang. Cody was a man in his late thirties and had been in law enforcement for more than 10 years when he took the job of sheriff here. Try as he might, Bart and his gang always managed to elude capture. Finally, Sheriff Cody took on three men as deputies whose ages were 22, 25 and 28 years of age. The oldest had a little experience in the field, the younger two did not. They were, however, all muscular, trained in fighting and anxious to make names for themselves in law enforcement.

“It seems one day, Bart was fed up with being pursued and harassed by the sheriff and his deputies and his men staged a spectacular hold up a ways out of the town. Someone rode in frantically to the sheriff’s office and told Cody about the robbery going on. Naturally, Cody rounded up his deputies and the four of them took off like lightning to the place where Bart was supposedly robbing an armored truck.

“When the “posse” got there, they found no one. No robbers, no victims, no truck – nothing”

The man sitting on the chair in front of the store, kicked back, leaning the back of the chair against the wall of the building. “Is that the kind of disappearance you been telling me you heard about? Sounds like kids pranking the sheriff and his deputies. Sure don’t sound much like little green men – or gray men – or anyone from Mars”

“No. Of course not. That is just the beginning of the story and that disappearance becomes patently false as the story goes on,” the reporter explained.

“Please. Go on then. I won’t make no more interruptions”.

“Ok” said Ed and he continued.
